The Reed avocado is easily recognized by its nearly spherical shape, thick and rough skin, and bright green color that does not change as it ripens. Its size is considerably larger than other varieties, weighing between 250 and 600 grams.
Like the Hass, the Reed has a tough skin that offers significant advantages:
– Good protection during transportation
– Longer shelf life, with excellent preservation in the refrigerator (up to 5–7 days once ripe)
The Reed’s flesh is a pale yellow and stands out for its rich, buttery taste with sweet and delicate notes. It has a high flesh-to-seed ratio due to its relatively small seed.
Reed avocado has a more limited season, being a summer variety, available mainly from late spring to early autumn.
